2010 Beehive Nominee Books

This site lists the books nominated for the Beehive Award, This award recognizes great literature in five categories : Young Adult Fiction, Children's Fiction, Poetry, Informational Book, and Picture Book. The winners are chosen by the young readers of Utah.

Read one of these books, return your ballot to the library, and you will be entered into the BEEHIVE RAFFLE.
The ballots are due April 6, 2010. The winners will be announced on April 7.


OHMS Brown Bag Book Club


Everyone is invited to join us during lunch for a montly book discussion. Here is the schedule for 2009 - 2010 :
  • Thu., Oct. 8 - Schooled by Korman (realistic fiction, humor, school)
  • Wed, Nov. 11 - House of Dark Shadows by Liparulo (fantasy fiction, thru time & dimensions, horror / suspense)
  • Thu., Dec. 17 - Found by Haddix (fantasy fiction, thru time & dimensions)
  • Thu., Feb. 4 - Hurt Go Happy by Rorby (realistic fiction, animal friend, disability)
  • Thu., Mar. 11 - Epic by Kostick (science fiction, virtual reality computer game)
  • Thu., April 15 - Chains by Anderson (historical fiction, revolutionary war, slavery)
  • Thu., May 20 - TBA (mystery)

We will read a variety of genres, such as realistic fiction, school fiction, horror, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, nonfiction, and survival story). Featured books will be current (last three years) or considered a classic, available in paperback, popular with critics and readers, and full of interesting discussion points.

Before the Brown Bag Book Club meeting :

1. Read the book.

2. Sign up in the library to attend the club meeting.

3. During the week of the meeting, come to the library to pick up your Book Club pass sometime before lunchtime.

4. Use your Book Club pass to leave for lunchtime five minutes early.

During the Brown Bag Book Club meetings :

1. Bring your lunch to the library.

2. Enjoy your lunch, along with some chips and soda available there.

3. Discuss the book. Be ready to share your favorite part(s) of the book, and what you liked and/or didn't like about it.

4. Win prizes.

5. Help pick other books for upcoming Brown Bag Book Clubs.

READING FOR ENJOYMENT

Here are some thoughts about reading I have found to be true:

  • You may be too young for a specific book, but you are never too old!

  • "Every reader his or her book" (as stated by Ranganathan). In other words, you CAN find a book you will enjoy.

  • "Every book its reader" (as stated by Ranganathan). In other words, every book is NOT for every reader.

  • You don't have to finish a book that you've started. If you are not enjoying your book's story after reading 50 pages, stop reading it! If it hasn't grabbed your interest by then, it's not worth the time. Go fnd something else to try. If you want to know how the story ends before moving on, skip ahead and read just the last few chapters. (This advice is helpful ONLY if you are reading something that you chose to read, not something assigned.)
